Independent Film Reviews: Dead Hooker In The Trunk(2009)

It always surprises me when people can sit through the massive amount of crap that is dished out from the major studios and actually walk away and say  "That was a good film", we are all guilty of it.

With "Dead Hooker in a Trunk" there are allot of people saying that also, in the same respects some are saying the complete opposite.

You may ask yourself why am I reviewing a film that is so many years old, well there is another article  in itself.  I was fortunate enough to see it this past weekend on The Sundance ChannelThe one thing that I can state is that there is something to be said for raw talent, I was glued to the screen any little noise outside of what was happening on the screen was pissing me OFF!!

In the story Jen and Sylvia play sisters where they are complete opposites one is the nerd girl the other a brutal ass kicking, no bullshit woman. She stands strong and where this film got axed from a screening in Saskatoon for the misunderstanding of it's portrayal of the "Hooker" said that it had bad connections with the missing of Aboriginal prostitutes in Western Canada.

There are some incredible scenes when Jen Soska gets her eye taken out and the scene where it happens is very believable. Also Sylvia is a killer man does she ever kick ass and take names too.

With the film being so old if you have any interest I will get to the story, however there are many things to point out.

Take for instance the full front shot from the outside of the car into the front window, I like that they do not have many cameras and for that this makes for a more intimate act, very much like a play almost. I noticed this being a horror film with three very attractive young women could have used sex soo many times over to sell over the film, but that is not done here instead we are merely watching a four(some recently)friends think of what to do with the "Dead Hooker In A Trunk".

So the story goes that four friends set out for a regular pick-up and they smell a foul smell in the car they find the Dead Woman.

Having known the sisters for some time before seeing this film I almost feel like a big brother watching my sisters in their first film, a very proud brother. Now I have always enjoyed movies of all genres, my favorite being horror so there in itself is one of the reasons that I enjoyed this as much as I have. Also with the major studios only redoing films and many more sequals this year and any other year-this was an original film.

With both of them producing the film, with help from their parents(yes they approve)these two women are not afraid of getting dirty. This film has the edge that Kathryn Bigelows "Near Dark" has, and she is one of my all time favorite directors.

OK so the story...when they find the dead woman they are torn as what to do one says call the police, another is over at the side of the car puking and the other two, well.

...they seem to like that they are witness to a death so close to them. They continue their quest for their daily habit of drug purchasing and with that comes trouble of course.

Things are quickly handled in terms of bloodshed and the small chainsaw, I do not like to spoil films for others so that is all I will say.

A cowboy is an interesting addition to the film and once again he is quickly dealt with!

When near the end of the film they realize the hooker is actually not dead-she is also dealt with.

This is not a film for everyone but also if you like this type of film then I cannot recomend this enough and I highly doubt you will be disapointed-if you can appreciate a film of little money but   breathing full of life and heart.

Now they are in the process of their next film getting it all ready to show to the world. The film is "American Mary" again they have written and directed, produced and are in the process of editing it all together. They both also have parts in the film as well. They have aqquired the help of Katherine Isabel(Ginger Snaps Trilogy)in this  story follows medical student, Mary Mason, as she becomes increasingly broke and disenchanted with the surgical world she once admired. The allure of easy money sends Mary into the world of underground surgeries which ends up leaving more marks on her than her so called 'freakish' clientele.

I for one am very excited to see what is up their sleeves for this one and hope I get to see this when it debuts in Vancouver. I wish these two women all the luck in the world for whatever they choose to do next. With masters like Wes Craven and others only disapointing us in the last number of years all I can say is move over and let the ladies have their time now.Especially the Twisted Twins!
