Press Release: Vancouver Short Film Festival--January 29-30, 2016








Hottest lineup to­-date unveiled for Vancouver Short Film Festival’s 6th anniversary celebration. Over $15,000 in cash and prizes to be awarded by esteemed jury.



VANCOUVER SHORT FILM FEST (VSFF) announces their 2016 Official Selections for the 6th annual festival to be held January 29th and 30th, 2016, at Vancity Theatre. This year, festival goers can look forward to 23 short films from BC filmmakers, selected from over 180 submissions.



The film lineup includes 9 women directors, 9 student films and even a 9 year old filmmaker! Maia Costea, director writer and actor in Behind the Rocks, is a 9 years old actress from Vancouver Canada, who discovered the passion of filmmaking when she started a filmmaking program called Young Moviemaking. Behind the Rocks is Maia’s directorial debut which will be screening in the Child’s Play program and is in competition for the Best Student Short Film Award.



23 short films are competing with the opportunity to win 12 awards and over $15,000 in cash and prizing to be awarded. VSFF Awards include: the $2,500 Best Short Film Award and $2,500 Best Student Film Award sponsored by William F. Whites, along with Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director, Best Woman Director, Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography, Best VFX, Best Sound Design, Best Editing and new this year, the Underdog Award sponsored by Raindance Vancouver (a free 1 year membership with Raindance and 1 free workshop of their choosing). These awards will be decided by a jury of 3 established industry professionals: Aaron Bushkowsky, Nicholas Humphries, andKat Montagu.



“BC has such a wealth of talent,” says Festival Director Kristyn Stilling, “It is exciting to be able to showcase some of best short films our province has to offer and celebrate our homegrown filmmakers.”
