Story Synopsis:
In 1977, paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren travel to London, England, where single mother Peggy Hodgson believes that something evil is in her home. When Peggy's youngest daughter starts showing signs of demonic possession, Ed and Lorraine attempt to help the besieged girl, only to find themselves targeted by the malicious spirits.
Having only just watched the first film the night before as a refresher as it has been a while since I watched it. I made the unfair expectations of this also being a major scare fest. We have the solid story as this is all based on fact as we did in the first film.
This film is more worried about characters then what goes bump in the night. We still have all this of course, however this is on a different plate here not trying to copy or duplicate the first film in any manner.
Patrick Wilson(left) plays Ed Warren and Vera Farmiga as Lorraine Warren she is easily one of my favorite actresses , great in everything she does. This is a great pairing of these 2 actors they work well together , connected in their work and each other and the parts they are playing.
For those of you who are easily scared there are scenes that will make you jump , but I felt this one was more about the family in England than it was about the demon and man above. There are some effective shots but the majority of the camera work left the viewer as an outsider at least early on in the film, got back to regular camera work later on.
Madison Wolfe(above)plays Janet and what an amazing actress is playing both the nervous child as the man enters the room she is in, as well as the child possessed(below)
Wish the award shows that that always arrive with spring would take horror films with more merit than they do normally. Without the Chainsaw Awards that are done by Fangoria Magazine each year there are not that many globally that even pay attention or award anything horror. Animated films get more respect than horror, they even have their own categories.
A good number of people often discredit horror as stupid or a waste of time etc, I am not big on musicals or romance films but each to their own. There is some great work being done in this overlooked genre, some also not good at all. But that goes for any genre of film.
Even as children parents often read their children bedtime stories written by the Brothers Grimm which ended up causing a lot of our nightmares and as we grow older we either like remembering those scares or just want to forget them all together , I chose to re-live mine.
The family in this story is real and so is the great casting of the young actors as well. What is different here is there is not the typical bickering as we see in any and all films with young kids but instead the mother here has raised a strong family support group which makes this even a better story than initially was written I am sure.
The adults also add the part of non believers , realists and some that share in their beliefs and want to help. The church overall needs documented facts before they will send a priest in to do an exorcism of a soul or a house. With only some audio of the young girl possessed , they get some footage of her trashing the kitchen they were meant to believe was done by the demon. This leads the Warren's on a trip back to the US , but wait something else occurs to them. The latter part of the film wraps up a little too completely but not enough to disappoint, but would have liked a bigger finale.
All in all I found it to be a great ghost story and the evil nun to the right was an actual demon , who also is getting a spin off movie soon as did the doll Annabelle from the first film.
