Emily The Criminal Movie Review From Vertical Entertainment Opening In Select Theaters In Canada August 12, 2022 (Route 504 PR)

The reviews above do not lie, Aubrey Plaza is on fire in this film, subtle and gritty, intense -do not cross her!

We see this from the very first scene, where she is at a job interview. When she is asked about her past, she is quite reluctant to give details. She is surprised that the potential employer has already done a criminal record check on her, she clearly does not realize or know that they have the ability and right to do so, to protect their company and potentially themselves.

She works part-time as a driver for a local restaurant and helps one of the workers take them to board parties etc.

They pass each other on the street one day and he asks her to work a shift for him and asks her if she is looking for other work, she says yes, he then texts her a number and said to text it and she can make $200.00 an hour.

Sure, there are a lot of movies that are similar to what is being shown here, the difference maker is Aubrey Plaza and her almost flawless performance, it's what she doesn't do that is what is so lifelike.

So many times we get cardboard cutouts of characters, that they seem dull almost instantly. The writer/director John Patton Ford has to be credited here as well, as he allows for the scenes where there is no dialogue, just facial expressions.

The slow burn pace may seem off for a film like this, but a good story needs time to tell its story. I was curious as to what happened next because I have been watching movies for most of my life and in this capacity for over 12 years now.

I appreciate the films that let you get to know the character(s) through the course of the film.

Emily gets herself in some hot water in regards to what she is told not to do, shop at the same store more than once a week, she does and is reprimanded for it. She makes an even bigger mistake that almost costs her, her life.

There are a lot of really well-done scenes that I even didn't see coming and that is another reason I enjoyed this film as much as I did. I do not want to say much more than that as I don't want to spoil anything for the reader.

The film will be showing in Canada on August 12, through Vertical Entertainment!

The gritty crime drama will open at the following theatres:

Montreal – Cineplex Forum

Vancouver – Cineplex International Village
