Toronto After Dark Film Festival -Canadian Shorts

With The Temple(Le Temple) coming in just under 18 minutes, it's the best film I saw during the festival, the storytelling and the overall scale of the film are a wonder.

This shot alone and the way the submarine makes its way through the water is impressive in that this is a 3D animated film, some of the best I have seen this, or any year. To avoid the attack of other ships above the surface the captain tells the crew to sink to the lower depths at one point to where mutiny happens. The tension keeps mounting building and it's really a treat to have seen such a great film. I hope it gets some attention come award season, it deserves it.

I might be showing my age with this one, but it quickly reminded me of The Entity with Barbara Hershey, an exceptional film that has been overlooked and not easy to find either.

A young woman comes to the door when her friend is knocking, she is concerned about what she is hearing and she's not been in contact lately, with her. Right away we think an abusive partner, is not the case.

Very well done short, was hoping for more, the only downside of a short film, often is I often want more, but that's a good thing too.

This may be a film that could possibly be up for some awards as it's very well done and it is from the NFB, they have a great history of their shorts winning awards, including Oscars for short films.

Again, wanting more but what we get here is there is an accident in the ship harbor between two ships and as the title would have us believe, there is a flying sailor. Yes indeed, and done in such a clever way too. As he is flying he loses all of his clothes and we see his memories going through his mind of the life he lived. I quite enjoyed this little film, it did quite well.

The Ratcatcher's Daughter is a film not easily explained, 1920s Petrograd Nina finds herself immersed in books and comes across Anton, a revolutionary who is fleeing the military. He has a way with the rats of the city.

While I found the animation quite well done, the story goes down a different way and becomes something else, which is where it's hard to explain, you will have to watch it and see for yourself.
