Until Branches Bend Review-- Across Canada Starting March 20, 2023

Shot on 16mm film and in the interior of British Columbia, Penticton, Keremeos, and Summerland, Until Branches Bend is a quiet & subtle tale of a young woman who finds a bug in a peach at the packaging plant where she works.

The tale is simple in its story, yet as it starts to move along it really gets you, the audience wondering how it will turn out.

The film has already won some awards and has been shown in the USA as well, pretty good for a small feature film. Robin(Grace Glowicki) decides to work through her break and continue to inspect the peaches on the line. She finds one with a wormhole in it and proceeds to open it with a knife, and out jumps a bug. She grabs a cup and immediately covers it and finds a jar to put it in.

She then takes it to her boss Dennis(Lochlyn Munro, When Time Got Louder, Riverdale) and he calls in the company's bug expert it's all brushed off and is told that it's nothing for them to worry about.

Robin not taking their word for it feels the need to have someone at the agricultural lab and gives him some photos as he is leaving the office. She then finds the plant shut down her next day at work and we can see by her expression, she feels responsible.

When word gets out that the shutdown is because Robin didn't want to be quiet about it and chose to speak up, she is now ostracized, basically from the community. She's heckled when she's out in public, and her tires are slashed when she is grocery shopping. She also has someone throw a brick through a window in her house.
The only person she has is her sister Laney(Alexandra Roberts, in her first feature film) who has now decided to go work at a cherry orchard to earn some money. Robin is all alone.

This is quite a solid first feature film from writer/director Sophie Jarvis(The Worst Day Ever, Medical Drama). It allows us to get to know characters and how something like this can affect a small community. The backlash that Robin feels is very real, we see first hand what it does to her, and yet she has a very big personal secret that she does not share with anyone but her sister Laney, near the end of the film that she is pregnant.
I look forward to what Sophie Jarvis does next.
