Canadian TIFF Award-Winning Feature Film SEAGRASS Debuts in Theatres Across North America--Special Event Screenings With Q&A's In Select Cities
VANCOUVER, BC (February 20, 2024) – It was recently announced that Game Theory Films is releasing Japanese Canadian writer/director Meredith Hama-Brown’s International Film Critics FIPRESCI prize winning debut feature film Seagrass in theatres across Canada and the US. The film will have its highly anticipated theatrical release across North American starting on February 23, 2024 with special event screenings and Q&A's in select cities including Los Angeles, New York, Las Vegas and Toronto. The film will open widely with screenings in New York, California, Washington, Colorado, Las Vegas, Atlanta, Florida, Maryland, Texas, Oregon, Virginia, British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Manitoba and Quebec with more locations to be announced.
Seagrass, which premiered to sold out crowds as a part of TIFF’s 2023 Discovery Programme, stars Ally Maki (Shortcomings, Hacks) as Judith; a Japanese Canadian woman who brings her family to a self-development retreat after the recent death of her mother. When Judith and Steve (Luke Roberts, The Tourist) befriend another interracial couple, played by Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians) and Sarah Gadon (Ferrari) who seem to have the perfect marriage, Judith begins to recognize how irreparably fractured her relationship is. When their distressed relationship begins to affect the children’s emotional security, the family is forever changed.
Seagrass won the coveted International Film Critics Awards FIPRESCI Prize at TIFF and was selected for Canada's TIFF Top Ten showcase screening. The film has received critical praise and recently screened for the first time to a US audiences at its US festival premiere at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival.
Special event screenings with Q&A's are set in New York at the Roxy Cinema, in Los Angeles at the Laemmle Royal starting February 22nd, 2024 and in Las Vegas at the Regal Theatre starting February 23rd, 2024. Opening night screenings in each of these location will be accompanied by a Q&A with cast and crew; including Ally Maki in LA, Meredith Hama-Brown and cinematographer Norm Li in New York and Chris Pang in Las Vegas.Seagrass will be available to audiences across North America on VOD from April 2nd, 2024 across Canada and the US.
Hama-Brown is a Japanese Canadian artist whose work has explored themes of uncertainty, grief, identity and lineage. It was announced just before the world premiere of Seagrass that she was signed by Gersh and she is currently in the early stages of writing her sophomore feature film. Seagrass is written and directed by Hama-Brown, Cinematography by Norm Li, CSC (Something You Said Last Night), produced by Experimental Forest Films’ Tyler Hagan (The Body Remembers When the World Broke Open) and Ceroma Films’ Sara Blake (Until Branches Bend). The all-star cast includes Ally Maki (The Big Door Prize), Luke Roberts (Ransom), Chris Pang (Crazy Rich Asians), Sarah Gadon (Maps to the Stars), newcomer Nyha Breitkreuz and Remy Marthaller (The Island Between Tides, opening Cinequest 2024).
Seagrass was made possible through the support of Telefilm Canada, Game Theory Films, Hamilton Moving Pictures, Creative BC, The Harold Greenberg Fund, Tony Yang, CFC (CFC/Netflix Accelerator Lab) and the TIFF Filmmaker Lab. World sales and distribution in Canada are being handled by Game Theory Films.
