Crazy8s Announces Top 6 Finalists For ANNUAL 8-Day Filmmaking Challenge


VANCOUVER, BC (January 15, 2025) –  The Crazy8s Film Society is pleased to announce this year’s top 6 finalists. The 8-day annual filmmaking challenge provides funding, professional mentorship and support to emerging filmmakers to help them produce a short film. This year’s films include projects from some of BC’s brightest rising talents including Samantha Pineda (My Mother, The Zombie); Mia Petrovic (Our Monsters); Hannah Yang (Red Light Rebel); Jackie Hoffart (The Reveal); Amanda Wandler (W7éyle [Moon's Wife]); and Spencer Zimmerman (Where Is My Head?).

“We’re beyond excited to share these diverse stories from some of BC’s brightest emerging filmmaking minds and talents, who recognize how life’s twists can inspire an inventive or unexpected turn in response - prepare to be deeply engaged, potentially surprised, and thoroughly entertained by these six short films,” said Grace Chin, Executive Director of Crazy8s.

My Mother, The Zombie

Logline: A coming-of-age horror short film about an introverted fourteen-year-old, who seeks normalcy despite caring for her zombie mother. This is a story about grief, family and love.


Our Monsters

Director: Mia Petrovic

Logline: A pair of neighbouring kids, Daniel and Peter, team up to defeat the monster in Daniel’s closet. When the mission goes south, Daniel must face the reality that some monsters are harder to fight than others.



Red Light Rebel

Logline: A pastor stuck at a red light finds himself at a crossroads with God.


The Reveal

Logline: A comedy about 42-year-old, nonbinary Stevie, who struggles to support their sister’s gender reveal party while harbouring some news of their own: that they have started on testosterone, that they are transitioning.

 W7éyle (Moon's Wife)

Logline: When a groundbreaking pill promises eternal life, a couple’s love is tested as they confront what it means to live, love, and leave a legacy in the face of an irreversible decision: have children or to live forever.




 Where Is My Head?

Director: Spencer Zimmerman

Logline: A wannabe influencer falls in love with a decapitated head after she accidentally runs over a cyclist while filming a TikTok.


Running since 1999, Crazy8s was created to help emerging filmmakers who have little or no access to funding for short films and to train crew and cast. Crazy8s has become a place to discover new talent, provide valuable on-set training, and give opportunities for filmmakers to create work that can be used to launch their careers in the film industry. Crazy8s has provided working opportunities for thousands of people, in addition to supporting directors, there are opportunities for producers, writers, performers, cinematographers, editors, and a host of other crew members who gain valuable experience and build working relationships that often continue for many years to come.

Many Crazy8s alumni over the past 24 years have gone on to have vibrant careers in the film industry. Many more Crazy8s filmmakers have gone on to have successful careers in the film industry. Approximately 24,000 people have attended Crazy8s screenings, and the films have appeared in more than 500 international film festivals, with many being broadcast on television and on streaming platforms worldwide. 

ASTRONAUT (2024) directed by Kevin Cheng saw its world premiere at Edmonton International Film Festival and recently screened locally at the Vancouver Asian Film Festival and the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival, screening next at the Victoria Film Festival. DTF? (2024) directed by Jess McLeod had its world premiere at Atlanta’s Out On Film festival and screened at the Chilliwack Independent Film Festival where it was nominated for awards in directing, acting, editing, script, and Best of BC, winning in the categories of Directing (Jess McLeod), Acting (Sam Krochmal) and Editing (Hayley Sawatzky). It screened next at Whistler Film Festival where it received Honorable Mention in the Best Canadian ShortWork Award category.

Garfield Wilson, DTF? co-producer and co-lead performer, won for Best Performance, Short - UBCP/ACTRA Awards 2024. GONE ABROAD (2024) directed by Kevin Ang had its world premiere at Whistler Film Festival. TOE PICK (2024) directed by Teresa Alfeld also premiered at Whistler Film Festival. WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DO WITH YOUR HANDS? (2024) directed by Larissa Thompson world premiered at Northern Lights Fantastic Film Festival, Winter Film Festival (NYC) and The Poppy Jasper International Film Festival.

Finished films are screened at a gala screening and party that will take place March 29th, 2025. The gala is attended by a who’s who of the Vancouver film industry and local and international film lovers.
