Curl Power, The Power Of Friendship & Team Building Through Leadership & Inspiration Starting In Theaters Friday, January 24th
We have all had dreams of doing what we love(ed) when we were younger, and maybe we are doing those dreams now, these five young women have not given up on their dream of being the very best in curling.
I have played just about every sport there is out there when I was younger, whether it is tennis, basketball, football, hockey, soccer, & many others, with volleyball being my favorite, curling is not one that I have ever tried.
There is a part of the film where two of the young women are discussing a list that someone has compiled on the 60 hardest sports to play & they note that not only are they not taken seriously because of their ages, but because it is curling. The number was 56, with ping pong(apparently) listed as being harder to play. One of them says that it's coming from people who don't even play.
There is a really quiet moment when another one of the girls is feeling overwhelmed, crying, and her teammate's mom, (who is also one of the coaches that was a part of the Women's Canadian Olympic Bronze team in Salt Lake City in 2002.) She has her in the hallway and says she has two options, she can withdraw from the competition, or she can give her a moment to compose herself and join her team again.
We join the team on the ice, in their personal lives and some of the subjects get into their personal relationships I was curious how much of their time was not documented. One of the young women shared she found out about her boyfriends cheating with a few other girls, which I found awkward hearing that, and how some of this might impact them further in their lives. They obviously felt comfortable enough to share it on camera, which means they had trust in the director and her team.
With that being said, I think this can stand as a testament to sticking with your goals and what you want out of life. One of the team mentioned that they were at a particular club for 14 hours! Yikes, that is a big commitment. They all have a great support unit, whether it comes from each other, their families, coaches, etc it all has an impact on the support they need that will help them in their futures no matter what they choose to do.
