Determined to make their own luck, a group of defiant women plot revenge on the man who wronged them by pulling off an audacious heist of his Irish bars on St. Patrick's Day.

“I am thrilled to be partnering with Laura and Krista on this film. With Out of Luck, I'm looking to bring the same sensibility that has made me a long-standing success as a novelist to Canadian filmmaking,” says McKenzie. “The development of the Canadian commercial book market demonstrates to me that the Canadian public is hungry for home-grown commercial film projects, especially given the current political climate.”

Laura Adkin

Laura Adkin is coming off the recent success of her feature debut Re:Uniting, which she wrote and directed. The film world premiered at the Austin Film Festival in 2023 and launched theatrically across North America in 2024. Re:Uniting starred Jesse L Martin (Law & Order) and Michelle Harrison (The Flash) in leading roles won numerous awards throughout its run.

“When Catherine came to me with this idea, I jumped at the opportunity to work with her on it,” says Adkin. “Out of Luck is a high-stakes, suspenseful, female-driven heist movie with a unique Canadian flair.”

McKenzie has published twenty novels and is approaching 2 million books sold worldwide, making her one of Canada’s leading commercial fiction writers. Her novels have been shortlisted for the Hugh McLennan Prize for Fiction, the Canadian Crime Writers’ Award, and the Goodreads’ Choice Awards, among others. The next book in her Vacation Mysteries series will be released on April 28th, 2026.

Krista Rand

Adkin and Rand will be taking the film to Cannes, where they will further develop and shop the script through the Film Market Access Program. Founded by film programmer Kirk Cooper, Film Market Access has successfully brought emerging talents to the Festival de Cannes, as well as Marché du Film. The program provides a unique opportunity to gain firsthand experience in the highly competitive business of marketing and selling films.
