This has easily become my favorite series since I saw Hill Street Blues in the 80s. I don't normally review TV shows/series. I thought I would reach out and see if I could review this season; they granted me access.
I am not late to the party either; I have been hooked since the first episode of season 1.
Very much like old-school storytelling, the characters that we have been following throughout the series are already very well established before we, the audience, even meet them. There have been a few deaths among the crew during the time in which the series has taken place. The series is based on a number of books by Mick Herron.
The title of this episode is Circle of Life. River Cartwright (Jack Lowden) is mourning the loss of his grandfather and is at Front Desk, or MI5, as they plan his funeral.

A former security agent is shown training young students how to defend themselves in a martial arts class, where he is a black belt. We follow him shopping and returning home... to his shipping crate? Yes, he has a developing plan to make houses out of old shipping crates and possibly even have them stacked on top of one another.
He is greeted by a young couple(it seems), and he invites them in. They have told him that they have heard of his plans for the crates and have someone else who is very interested.
He can sense something is off and asks them to leave; however, they have other plans.
Word comes quickly about his death, as he was a former MI5 agent, and also a member of Slough House. However, word of his death is kept from Jackson Lamb, that is until the lead dog at first desk alerts him, and the suspicion is that it was not an accident.
The tension that builds up in this, and many of the episodes, goes almost unmatched among the few TV shows that I have watched over the decades. It's the story, the actors, and the directing that help bring it all together so well.
It is found out that they have all been removed from the database and they're not getting paid from The Park, where First Desk is also at. Jackson has no desire to stick around for the day if he's not getting paid, and instructs Catherine Standish (wonderfully played by Saskia Reeves), to find out why.
After the moments in the church for the ceremony for River's grandfather, they all go to the cemetery, where words are thrown from Jackson to Mum, the head of MI5/first desk, and she reveals something shocking that has Catherine slip near the grave as she hears a shocking truth come from her lips. Pulling herself together, she quickly leaves the area.
River, having a moment to himself outside of the church, notices his father outside of the stone wall in front of the church. He goes to confront him and is no match for his very crafty father, played by Hugo Weaving.
Another former MI5 agent is found dead and Jackson Lamb is wanting checks made on other former agents to be sure of their safety.
