We Bury The Dead Starring Daisy Ridley--Movie Review--In Theaters Now

Let me start by saying that I am not a fan of zombie movies. I have seen my fair share over the many years I have been reviewing movies. The change that makes me want to see the film is its lead, Daisy Ridley.

It's no surprise that she is known to so many with her roles as Rey in the most recent Star Wars movies. For me, some of her best work has come after the films; the different choices she has made since then have been different with each role.

Sometimes I Think About Dying is a dark comedy which I quite enjoyed--my review here:

Sometimes I Think About Dying

Then she went on to The Cleaner, which is a high-rise action movie, ala Die Hard with an environmental message. It didn't really work for me.

Now she's in a zombie movie, well, kind of...

The film is being marketed as a zombie film, but it's more of a disaster film with a few zombies sprinkled in for good measure.

There has been a terrible mistake that has happened after a military disaster in Tasmania. Ava(Daisy Ridley) goes to help with the cleanup of dead bodies, with the hopes of also finding her husband, who has come to a nearby area for a work conference.

Amongst the dead are some who have regenerated, and they are to light their flares to let the military know to come and put them to rest, for good.

The emotion shown by Daisy Ridley is reserved, and yet, as the film is nearing its end, she has some difficult choices to make and shows some fury, frustration, and grief all thrown into one performance. This is why I wanted to see the film; I know she has that range.

I will give the film its credit, it certainly didn't go down the typical road where we have seen most films these days go in the past. She, at an early part of the film, teams up with a young man, which was a refreshing relationship. No typical sexual tension or urges to be in bed together.

However, one plot point could be eliminated entirely from the film, as it has to be one of the dumbest plot lines in recent memory, and it really kills the end of the film. I was enjoying it up to this point.
A soldier who is grieving his dead wife & child takes Ava to his home to have her dress up as his wife and dance with him, just completely pointless. When it doesn't go as planned, he goes nuts, that's all I will say. However, I will say I didn't know that zombies could give birth to normal children. Learn something new every day.

For those who are looking for a George Romero kind of zombie movie, or even Train to Busan, will not be happy with the limited amount of zombies, kills, etc.

Daisy Ridley does a great job of carrying the weight of the film on her shoulders, and I am interested to see what she does next.
